The speciality coffee edit · UK
We visit, we taste, we choose. A short, considered list of the best independent coffee shops in the UK — and exactly why they earned their place.
Start with CambridgeCambridge — our picks
Thirteen carefully chosen independent coffee shops across Cambridge and the villages just beyond it. Each one visited and assessed on its merits. These are the places that clear the bar.
Gwydir Street, Mill Road
A former Victorian brewery turned neighbourhood roastery-café. The gold standard for Cambridge speciality coffee.
Trumpington Street
Speciality coffee in a beautifully converted space opposite the Fitzwilliam Museum, with a walled courtyard garden.
Newnham Road
A neighbourhood café with a serious filter programme and Mill Pond views. Hone Coffee roasters, thoughtful sourcing.
Cherry Hinton Road
Filipino and Korean-inspired bakery with speciality coffee. The pastries are the reason to come — arrive early before they sell out.
Chesterton Road
Assembly Coffee and an own-bakery operation under the same roof. Dog-friendly and consistently good across multiple Cambridge sites.
Round Church Street
Two brothers, their own roastery, and a considered European guest programme. No wifi — a deliberate choice that shapes the atmosphere.
Regent Street
The second Bould Brothers site, bringing the same roastery-driven approach to the Regent Street end of the city.
King's Parade
Chelsea buns and coffee with a view of King's College Chapel. A Cambridge institution that earns its place on merit, not nostalgia.
Trumpington Street
The original Fitzbillies. Open since 1920 and still earning its place — full brunch, afternoon tea, and proper coffee.
Shepreth · 10 miles south
The source. Hot Numbers' production roastery with a full café, bakery and garden. Open Fridays until 20:30.
Sawston · 5 miles south
An artisan bakery and coffee bar in a Cambridge business park. Deceptively good — Missing Bean collab, everything baked fresh daily.
Milton · 3 miles north
Roasting since 1984 and finally, in 2024, a café worthy of the beans. Watch the 60kg Vittoria at work, then drink the result.
Hildersham · 9 miles south-east
An organic farm café open Thu–Sun. Completely unlike anywhere else on this list — unhurried, rural, and worth the effort to find.
Our approach
Dialled isn't a directory. We don't list every coffee shop and let the crowd decide. We visit, we assess, we choose — and we tell you exactly what we found.
A place earns its spot on Dialled by clearing a considered bar. Most don't make it.
What machine, what grinder, what brew methods. We believe the kit matters — and we tell you what's behind the bar.
Where it comes from, who roasts it, how it's extracted. Sourcing and execution carry equal weight.
Do they care? Is the café built around the coffee, or is coffee just a feature? We can tell the difference.
Vibe, service, and the space itself. Great coffee deserves a setting that does it justice.
"The speciality coffee world doesn't need another list of 200 places. It needs someone to choose twelve and mean it."
